Welcome to my personal site! I'm glad you're visiting. Here you'll learn a bit more about my work and background and, most importantly, I share personal and organizational development related thoughts and research via my blog.

Please connect with me on LinkedIn and follow me on Twitter (see the links at the top) and send me a note to say hello. I'm always looking to connect with people of high integrity and ambition.

P.S. In case you're wondering, the pin on my lapel represents the Treble Victor Group - an organization of former military members who now support one another in our second careers.

HEALTH & ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR

----- MY JOURNEY ----

Francis Organizational Consultants.Logo.jpg

PRINCIPAL,

FRANCIS ORGANIZATIONAL CONSULTANTS

2018 - Present

After many years of contributing to building success in business and the military and deep education in organizational behaviour, I have gone into business with myself and partners. We're focused on creating sustainable change within organizations. In almost all organizations, the people need to come first or the business risks.

Hire well - Support them to succeed - Encourage their growth

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER,

REGEN SCIENTIFIC INC.

2019-2021

Formerly Franmed Health, we strived to build a healthcare company that would always put the client first. Gather health information and make leading medical decisions for one's health. My first opportunity to be part of a start-up, which meant wearing many hats including operations, sales, HR, IT, client relations, and cleaning the occasional toilet.  We were able to design, build, and make operational a beautiful facility and world-class team in under 9 months - an incredible achievement.

VP, TALENT

MEDCAN

2017-2019

Medcan is North America's largest single-site medical clinic with over 400 staff, 100 physicians and practitioners. I had the privilege of being Medcan's first Head of Talent. No easy task as during the first year we undertook an HRIS implementation, job levelling project, a benefits redesign, and the creation of a talent brand - and of course, doing our best to support an amazing group of people!

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MILITARY LEADERSHIP AND PSYCHOLOGY,

ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE OF CANADA

2012-2016

What a fantastic experience to cap off a 20-year career in the Canadian Armed Forces. As an Assistant Professor, I contributed to organizational research, led a variety of groups and committees, and, of course, contributed to the development of Canada's future Officers. I primarily taught 3rd- & 4th- year students Organizational Behaviour, Advanced Leadership, and Military Ethics.

The Royal Military College of Canada is a University like no other. Students are required to not only achieve academic success, but must also be proficient in their second language, military skills, and physical fitness. They will graduate with a degree and an Officer's commission in the Armed Forces and then begin their career in their chosen profession (I was a Naval Warfare Officer).

NAVAL OFFICER,

CANADIAN ARMED FORCES

1996-2016

In 1996 I left my hometown of Stellarton, Nova Scotia a couple days after my high school graduation to undertake bootcamp in Chilliwack, British Columbia (which happened to be the last course there before they closed the base for good). I would graduate from RMC, complete my training as a Naval Warfare Officer in Esquimalt, and join my first ship, HMCS Preserver by the end of the year 2000.

What an adventure! A few highlights:

- Responsible for driving a Warship in the Suez Canal and Straight of Hormuz

- 6 month deployment to the Persian Gulf after 9/11

- Becoming the Anti-Submarine Warfare Commander in HMCS Halifax

- Leading the dive team in two ships

- Numerous Search and Rescue missions (often in heavy seas)

- Being inspired by the incredible men and women I worked with every day.

MASTER OF SCIENCE, INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

 SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY, HALIFAX

This program brings much of the foundations for Francis Organizational Consultants. Industrial/Organizational Psychology is, essentially, business psychology.

Surprising to most, we can use science to hire well. Humans are biased and make poor decisions based on their 'gut'. This error can be significantly reduced (think 'Moneyball' in baseball). Do the work upfront and watch it pay dividends.

My thesis was the creation of a personality-based measure of integrity. Statistically, emotional intelligence, agreeableness, and conscientiousness act as a proxy measure for integrity.

P.S. Leaders can 100% be bred

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY, HALIFAX

You might notice that both Master degrees have the same dates. I put my nose to the grindstone and became the first person (on record) at Saint Mary's to complete two Master degrees simultaneously. An achievement I'm very proud off, especially considering we had 3 little ones at home (thank you, Pam!)

If I'm being honest, I think that completing an MBA prior to entering the business world doesn't maximize the opportunity. Sure, I learned a lot and built my network (arguably the most important piece to come out of business school), but I think one should do their MBA with a few years of relevant private sector experience.

BACHELOR OF ARTS, BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE OF CANADA

RMC is Canada's only military university. To graduate, in addition to academic success, I was required to excel at physical fitness, leadership, military professional skills, and - my toughest challenge - going from 'zero' French to fully bilingual was no easy task.

RMC is an extremely competitive program with about a 15% acceptance rate. Officer cadets will become full-time officers in the Canadian Armed Forces after graduation and be responsible to lead men and women immediately.

CERTIFICATE OF CORPORATE FINANCE

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

After gaining years of experience in the corporate world, I looked to consolidate my practical learning in finance - a key skill that I wanted to improve. Where better to complete such a program than Harvard.

Interestingly, I took a course in Real Estate Investing, which provided me with knowledge but also sparked a passion. Since completing the course I've invested in a number of properties in my home province of Nova Scotia and will continue to build passive income streams using this method. Key to success: find a terrific property manager!
